Profile: Tovainen is of common birth, born to crofters in the mountains of Beliidris, where he grew up amid the sheep his family kept, the miles between their croft and the nearest town meaning they rarely saw others. Yet from the earliest age, he dreamed of glory, loving the sagas and legends his grandmother would tell. At the age of six he cut himself a staff, and insisted his father teach him how to fight with quarterstaff, although his stick looked ridiculously small compared to his father's. He'd spend long hours practicing with it -- and the practice proved useful when, at age ten, he slew a wolf that had been raiding the herd.
When he reached his majority, he bade his parents goodbye -- his younger siblings, he knew, remained with them to help with the work -- and set out for the nearest town, where he enlisted in the Alekki army.
An enlisted soldier of the Ksar's Pikemen, he proved his merit in battle with raiding barbarians when his commander was slain, and he rallied his unit to fight onward, ultimately triumphing. He was rewarded with a billet at the Royal Military Academy, where he took a degree in military science and received his commission as an officer.
Since then, he has risen quickly to the highest rank, as much through his ability to charm the Court as by his undoubted military prowess. Though Alekki has other generals of equal rank, there is no doubt that, when war comes, Tovainen will be appointed supreme commander of the Ksar's army.
